The Christmas Miracle

It was 7 days to Christmas when Goke lost his job. Dupe got home to meet him on the living room sofa staring at a blank tv with a loud noise coming from somewhere she couldn't phantom.

"Hello Honey" She dropped a peck on his head as she glided towards the tv. She didn't get a response .

"Ahn ahn whats wrong with this tv?" Dupe asked as she scrutinised the tv which was now showing streaks of white and black.

"How are you. Have you eaten?" She turned back to her husband as she realised he hadn't said a word.

His look confused and worried her.
"How was work?" She asked and was glad he moved.

"Which work? I have been sacked" He muttered

Dupe was shocked. Shock was an understatement.
"What happened?" Her heart was beating very fast. She already knew what had happened to them. Trouble was coming.

Her baby chose that moment to give her a ferocious kick to remind her how great the trouble was. She was few weeks due. How would they take care of the baby? What about the naming ceremony!

"This is the worst moment of my life" Goke's deep voice shook like a child's.

Dupe sank into the sofa close to her as she tried to calm her breath. God please let this be a prank, Let this be a prank....

"I am doomed!" He cried as he threw the remote at the wall, shattering it to pieces. Dupe realised it was reality. It was real. What were they going to do?

Dupe was seeing her husband crying for the first time ever since they got married. She felt her heart tear and she drew herself up to sit by him.

"It's going to be fine... It will be fine..." she cried with him.

"Stop crying Goke, God will..."

"Just shut up okay!" Goke glared at Dupe and her lips snapped shut. She stared at him to be sure he was talking to her.

"Goke..."

"Are you just so thoughtless or you just choose to frustrate my life?" He screamed at her face. Dupe moved back with surprise.

"Goke, are you alright?" Dupe asked in anger. How dare he talk to her this way?

"Don't even start with your God talk okay! Just hold it to yourself!" He screamed as he jumped to his feet. Dupe stared at him.

"God this God that! You are never practical. Do you think this is a joke? That I lost my job is it funny, is it something you can joke with!"

Dupe got up to face him
"I wasn't joking Goke and God is not a joke!"

"Then why don't you call this God now because when you have this baby! Tell God to buy the diapers and food!" He turned round as he screamed.

He glared at her
"Who will pay the bills? Or take you for your check ups or now Christmas is here, very soon your parents will be screaming for food and clothes..."

Dupe slapped him hard across the face that he stumbled but caught himself from falling. Her hand was shaking along with her whole body.

Neither of them could believe the slap happened. Goke held his face with disbelief for some minutes before he turned and stalked out of the house.

Dupe heard the car start up after some minutes and she fell into a chair and broke down in tears.

That was how her home turned upside down few days to Christmas. Goke wasn't totally wrong but he was totally wrong for not acknowledging their baby and talking down about her parents. They loved to have all the family together and would want all their children bring gifts for them. It was a ritual they had to do. Goke wasn't exactly stingy but economical and would buy little unlike her brother and sister who would bring huge gifts.

Goke didn't return home until the next day and left home everyday before day breaks without saying a word to her.

She couldn't understand why he couldn't trust God. He didn't believe in God. She never took it serious because they went to church together but she never knew he saw God as a Joke... he didn't believe God can give him a job. Haven't I made a mistake by marrying him? She wondered but she thought about his job and she knew he talked out of anger but what about his unbelief?

Dupe decided to apologise to Goke that day and cooked a sumptuous dinner. It was his best food and he didn't deny it. He ate it all even without talking to her.

"I am sorry Goke..."

"I know what you want. Don't worry" He said and drank a glass of water. Dupe wondered what he meant.

"You are trying to  bribe me to follow you to your parent's dinner right? Well, it worked. I will drive you there and don't worry we will look like a happy beautiful couple. Just don't tell your parents I lost my job" He glares at her and left the table.

Dupe couldn't believe her ears but she didnt push it. At least he would go for the dinner since Christmas was the next day.

"We have to buy the gift" Dupe reminded him as they dressed up for the dinner.

"We have..." she tried to repeat as he didn't reply.

"I have heard you, don't worry about that!" He shouted and stalked out.

He drove her to her parents house as he promised but he lied. He didn't buy any gift. Her siblings brought huge gifts.

"Dupe, where's yours?" Her mother asked from the head of the dinner table holding sumptuous dinner. Food lined every part of the table and the children ran round with hunks everywhere. It was always a big night. She was mute as everyone stared at her.

"No worries if you forgot it..." her father smiled but Goke spoke up.

"We aren't buying any gift this year" he said and everyone stared at him.

"And we have to leave now. I have an important  meeting to attend" he got up even as everyone stared at them.

"Aren't you going?" Goke asked Dupe who got up to follow him as her mother screamed her name.

"You promised to buy the gift Goke!" Dupe shouted after him as they walked to the car.

"And so what? You knew I have lost my job but you still expected me to buy the gift ehn! Look at how sensible you are ehn!" He shouted and stalked to the car.

"You told me not to worry! You said you..." a sudden pain below her stomach stopped further words as Goke screamed back and entered the car.

"Get in, if you want a ride" he shouted as Dupe struggled to her side and fell into the seat  holding her breath. The pain was getting worse.

Goke sped out of her parent's compound and on full speed not caring about her little gasps and pained face.

"Very wise of you ehn, very wise!" He kept screaming as he drove.

"You promised. You should have just said you can't get it!" Dupe screamed with anger and pain.

He screamed back at her and the car started to jerk
"What!" He screamed as he pulled the car to a corner of the high way and the car came to a  abrupt stop. He kicked it again but it was dead, it didnt budge. Goke screamed and hit the steering with anger. He threw open the door and turned ro check the car. It was getting dark already on a remote high way.

"Goke..." Dupe cried as another pain tore her apart.
Goke came in to kick the car again but to no avail.

Dupe grabbed his cloth as she screamed as the pain increased.

"What! What's wrong with you!" He screamed back as he watched her screaming in pain. He looked so scared out of himself.

"Dupe! What the hell is wrong with you!" He shouted as he grabbed her.

"Fuck you bastard!!!" She screamed and grabbed his cloth.

"I think the baby is coming!" She screamed out.

Goke couldn't believe his ears.
"What! Jesus! Father!" He was thrown into panic

"Where do you think you are going?" Dupe screamed as he opened the door again

"To check the car, we have to get out of here!"

"The car is forken dead idiot! Call the hospital! Call my mum!" She screamed and fell back with exhaustion before another pain threw another scream out of her.

"My phone is dead! My phone is dead!" Goke couldnt believe it. He threw the phone away in dejection.

He jumped out of the car as he ran up and down the high way to get help anywhere but there wasn't  a soul in sight, a single car never showed up. Dupe found her strength leaving her by each seconds.

"Stay with me, please stay with me" Goke cried as he held her face as her eyes began to drop close.

"I have to sleep" she muttered

"No! You can't sleep Dupe! Our baby..."

"My baby..."  She bursted into tears as another contraction tore at her.

"Help me, help me Dupe!" He tried to transfer her to the back seat as she was losing consciousness.

Goke couldn't find help anywhere. A single car didnt show up on the dark and cold highway. It was cold and he was so scared for his wife and unborn baby.

"Our baby is going to die" Dupe cried with so much pain. Goke held her hands in tears.

"No, that won't happen, please Dupe open your eyes and stay with me, please..."

"Somebody help! Somebody just help me!" He screamed into the empty air as his voice was the only answer for him.

He heard his wife praying under her breath
"God... please help me..." she was crying as she repeated the words.

It was a very critical moment and she could call God? Goke couldn't believe his ears. Did she really believe it? Was it really not a joke for her? He had always felt insecure around her. She was from a rich home and she had everything. Even her personal business was booming before she got pregnant. He had felt she didnt believe in him and didnt even care about his finances since she had enough.

"I am sorry.... Please forgive me" he cried on her shoulder with dejection. Was he really going to loose her this way?

"I have to have this baby" she muttered. He cried at her words.

"Goke, you have to deliver this baby" she said and he stared at her in surprise.

"Dupe what are you saying? I don't know how..."

"I only need your hands... God will deliver this baby" She said

And he sighed. Still on this God matter? Well, of she really believed God, God should do something.

"Help me, I M going to try and push" she muttered
"What do I do?" He asked.

"Just shut up and catch the baby" she said and he glared at her in shock. Catch the baby? Where was it going to fall from? He stared round as she began to push with the little strength in her.

She kept praying and Goke looked out
"God, if you are truly truly true, you have to do something today!"

"Goke shut up!" She screamed as she let out another scream which stretched for a very long time.

He held her hand still and rubbed her head as she screamed endlessly.

"This is the last push Goke" she said and dug her fingers into his skin as she screamed and a ear splitting thunder shook the night sky and rain descended in a heavy torrent. Goke stared out the car in worry before he heard the faint cry. He looked round in disbelief. His ears must have been deceiving him. It really couldn't be a baby, could it?

"What? Is that a baby?" He asked in disbelief as he check and saw their child sliding out and he understood Dupe now, he caught the baby up in his arms with disbelief as he watched the tiny souls screaming along with the rain and he couldnt stop the tears from flowing everywhere. It couldn't  be true. His child... His child in his hands! So little, so beautiful, so fragile. He bursted into uncontrollable sobs as he held his child to his heart and cried out.

"We did it Dupe! We did it!"

There were knocks on the window and the car opened. There were a lot of voices and the breeze from the rain pouring in. The lights on his eyes did nothing to blind him from seeing his child in his hands.

Everyone were calling his name but he coupdnt stop crying.as he showed them the evidence.

"She was pushing and everything stopped and I heard the cry and my baby..." he was stammering and muttering words over eachother as he tried to explain even a little from the miracle he just experienced but words failed him.

"Goke! We are here! This is a miracle!" He heard a voice reply him and he saw his Father inlaw smiling and drawing him into an embrace.

"She's not responding!" Someone screamed and they turned to see Dupe laying quietly with her eyes closed. She looked so peaceful.

"Dupe!" He screamed as he carried her in his arms and there was a waiting chopper to take them to the hospital.

It was really a miracle. Her parents had found them after calling hesitantly without response. They had come after them to find their car by the road side.
Goke had never changed any of his belief but that night, he had to cos he found of a truth that God was true. He bought the biggest gift in the store and couldn't pay for the smile on Dupe's face as he told her how brave she had their child and how God did something. Dupe thought there wasn't a better name to give their child than 'Christmas' because she was just a miracle as Jesus also came as a miracle to save those who were lost and she was sure no other person ever named their child Christmas.

Thank you TOO CHEAP I get home late almost everyday except on Sundays which I dont go anywhere at all and relax taking my time to watch my favourite stations.  So all I want as I unlock the door to my 1 bedroom apartment was to fall on the bed and sleep off. The lock clicked and the door opened. "Good evening Sister Lope" Ehn I turned with shock at the so familiar voice to see the last person I expected to see staring back at me.  "Tinu!" I almost screamed as my eyes scanned her huge school bag hugged to her chest. My little sister. "Welcome sis. Why are you just coming..." She raised her wrist watch to her face and frowned "By this time"  I tried to process all she was saying but I could only come up with a string of words. "What are you doing here?" I asked and motioned at her to follow me in. We shuffled in
