CHASING THE WIND

TOO CHEAP

I get home late almost everyday except on Sundays which I dont go anywhere at all and relax taking my time to watch my favourite stations.

So all I want as I unlock the door to my 1 bedroom apartment was to fall on the bed and sleep off. The lock clicked and the door opened.

"Good evening Sister Lope"

Ehn I turned with shock at the so familiar voice to see the last person I expected to see staring back at me.

"Tinu!" I almost screamed as my eyes scanned her huge school bag hugged to her chest. My little sister.

"Welcome sis. Why are you just coming..." She raised her wrist watch to her face and frowned

"By this time"

I tried to process all she was saying but I could only come up with a string of words.

"What are you doing here?" I asked and motioned at her to follow me in.

We shuffled into my tiny apartment. It wasn't even up to where I should be staying at this stage of my life. I remember Tokunbo's new duplex at Lekki and I hissed.

"What happen?" I heard Tinu and I remembered she was there.

"I should be asking you that. What happened? Why are you here?" She was supposed to be with Mum. Ever since our father left...

"I failed my Jamb" Tinu said with a frown which was directed at me and I wondered why.

"Why? Again?" I asked in disarray. I am not really settled. I walked to the bed and pulled off my shoes and removed my wig to hang it.

"I really prayed and hoped that..."

"Hey shut up" I snapped at her with anger.

"What are you even saying? You prayed? If I slap you on the right, your left ear will disappear. Can you imagine? Is it prayer that will help you pass your exam"

"You know I am not good with school work" Tinu frowned and I really wanted to slap her.

"Go and learn trade na" I shot at her.

"Ahn ahn. I won't now go to school ni? Ah I know God can help me" She replied.

I sighed and shook my head at her.

"Is this not your second year? Ah you are still going to 5 years you dont know anything" I have to cook dinner.

"Are you cursing me?"

"See go away from my front" I pushed her lightly and walked into the inter joined living room and  kitchen.

She dropped her bag on the bed and sat down

"I am sure God will help me" She said

"Why didnt he help you then? You better go to Uncle Remi tomorrow and enrol for private exam and save yourself the stress" I hissed.

"Well thank you I dont need your help" She replied

I scoffed "I wasnt even offering you any help, What's my business? Come and pass me this salt jaire"

She replied me but I didn't hear her. This girl ehn, she needs to be spanked, see how she's talking to her elder sister.

"You have a call!" She shouted and I frowned

"Who's that?" I asked

"Ah its Uncle Deji o!"

My heart skipped as I heard that name and I felt dampened all at once.

"Bring it" I replied.

They were already talking like parrots when Tinu got to me. She was smiling gaily.

"Yes Sister Lope is making dinner but its fine" Tinu said to Deji while stating at me with my phone on her ear. I frowned at her and snapped the phone out of her hand.

"Hello. Are you done with your case?" I asked

"Yes. We finished just now and I am soooooo tired but... Let's go out for dinner.."

"Ah I am..."

"Tinu said she's okay with it" He smiled through the phone. Yes but I just felt down. There was nothing exciting about dinner with Deji.

"And I found this really good restaurant!" He added enthusiastically and my eyes lifted a little. His words replayed in my head. This may be a pay back for Tokunbo. Taking pictures in a lavish restaurant with Deji. I would order very expensive dishes. Ah she would be so jealous. I was laughing already.

"Okay. What time and text me the location" I said

"I am out now so in the next one hour we should be meeting. Okay I will text you" he said.

"Okay"

"See you bye" he said and I cut the line.

"So?" Tinu raised a brow.

"Cook your dinner. I am going to go get dressed" I laughed wickedly and cat walked to the room. I was suddenly excited for the dinner.

I had to look my best. All my friends are going to be seeing this when I post it on my social media. Gosh! None of my clothes look perfect for this occasion.

What will I do!

Even my shoes are already posted and me wearing it again isn't too proper. It would downgrade everything.

I picked my phone and chatted up one of my friends selling nice dresses. She sent pictures of nice dresses but there was just this one that stood out. It was beautiful, stunning red, one of the pretty silver shoes I saw would be perfect on it. Hnmm and it was also very pricey and to add to it Tokunbo had priced this dress and couldnt buy it. I had to buy it.

70k. Ah. I begged Roseline to reduce the price but she couldn't and this is the only dress for me. I pleaded with her since we were close friends and she agreed to let me pay the 30 I have and will balance up.

My order was at my door step in no time and I dressed up for the dinner. Deji had texted me the address of the restaurant.

I have just 30 minutes left! I hurried into my car and drove as fast as I could as I tried tracing the restaurant.

I am not really sure I got the exact location but I stopped where I could avoid getting lost and got out. There was a man sitting outside a building and I waved at him. Thank God he came over.

"Good evening, sorry... humm I think I am a little lost... I am heading towards seven stars please" I hoped he understood me cos he kept smiling strangely and scratching his whole body. I was getting uncomfortable.

"Seven star?" He smiled and I nodded

"Seven stars" I said while mumbling 'not seven star gosh' I rolled my eyes.

"Ah mama seven star nani abi?" He laughed and I felt repulsed by his continuous scratching. I wanted to shout at him to stop scratching and buy anti bacterial soap. Ugh.

"Ibi na ni abi" he laughed again and I just couldnt stand him. I walked away and got into my car slamming the door shut. He was still standing there for only God knows what reason.

Where the hell is Deji? I called him.

"Deji!"

"Where are you?" He asked amidst car horns and noise.

"I am lost! I dont even understand this place!"

"Calm down Lope. Where exactly are you?" He asked

"I followed the address and ended up..." I looked round and sighed dejected.

"What can you see now?" He asked

"There is this building painted red and green and few shops... on adele street..." I groaned.

"That building... can you see any sign?" He asked and I looked. I couldn't see anything but now, looking at it again, I think there's a sign. How didnt I see it before?

"Hum... I can see a board.." ahn ahn. I paused

"I will meet you shortly" he said but I was frozen. I read it again and again. I realised Mr Skin disease was the right one. In Big Bold Letters SEVEN STAR glared back at me.

"Deji!" He had cut the call. I glared at the building in confusion and got out of my car. It was getting dark. I walked toward the building with determination. I know it cant be. I walked to the door-like entrace and I walked into the building. No one even stopped me at the door. The fresh scent of locust bean and onions welcomed me.

I walked further like I was in a trance and I watched every living soul in this place oblivious of me,talking, laughing and eating with gusto.

"Welcome ma"

I turned at the voice

A short lady laughed and smiled at me

"You can sit here. What do you want?" she led me to a chair and I dont even understand how my legs are moving or how I sat in that chair.

"We have Amala and gbegiri...."

"Don't worry. I am waiting for someone" I said and she smiled again before walking away. I was left alone and I stared at the others eating quietly. I know I should remember something but I didnt remember anything.

"Lope! I am so sorry I am late!" Deji was here, walking with  boisterous strides as always and he collapsed into a chair.

"I am so tired. Late case untop Lagos traffic" he groaned and laughed alone while he called the same lady again before he turned to me.

"I have a surprise waiting for you. You are yet to taste the best Amala in the whole of Nigeria!" He laughed again. I stared at him.

"Give us two plates of Amala" he said and winked at me while smiling proudly.

"And two chilled Coke" he flashed his teeth again before the lady left and he turned to me.

"You are going to enjoy it" he said

"So how was your day... with Tokunbo, irede and sharon..." he sat back with a tired groan.

I stared at him feeling so weak

"Chinese restaurant" I muttered without thinking and Deji's smile faded slowly but it returned with full force and he laughed.

"That place is damn expensive. I am sure you enjoyed it" he smiled and held my hand across the table.

Our drinks arrived

"Business has been so bad for me Lope but very soon God is leading us somewhere" he smiled and I didnt even know when I scoffed with a quiet laughter.

Deji smiled at me and started sucking his drink through the straw.

"How was work today" he asked

I stared down at my dress and back at Deji's face.

"Oh! Our food is here" he said and opened the dishes and started eating.

"I am very hungry" he mumbled and laughed as he opened mine too and gestured at me to eat. He was eating while talking about please I dont even know what he is saying. He's just talking non stop and he is checking his watch repeatedly.

"I have an online meeting again by 9 can you imagine?" He made a tired face and laughed. It was half an hour to 9.

I sat up and stared at Deji as he smiled at me while eating.

"Am I a joke to you?" I asked slowly and he smiled but his smile suddenly disappeared as he stared at my face. He looked clearly surprised.

"Is..." I looked round

"Is this where you...called me out to? And made me waste... my precious time" it took a lot of time to process my words but Deji never stopped staring at me.

"L..." he paused while staring at me with confusion.

I shook my head in disbelief.

"What are... What are you talking about Lope?" He asked with hurt in his voice but I didnt care. I was more hurt. Can you just imagine!!! 70k!!! I think I was just recovering my memory and i wanted to scream. My life! I hadn't even thought of someone seeing us here! Though none of my friends could be living around here but...

"Are you blind ehn Deji! Look at where you brought me to!"

Deji looked round and back at me

"I know you... I thought I explained to you Lope and you told me it was okay. You know the way it is and I am.... I am hoping it will be better. You told me it was okay"

Yes. I told him that but...I didnt know it was up to this. This can't be happening to me! I didnt know it was this worse! How could he bring me to an eatery! What happened to ocean basket, cactus...

"This is so embarrassing! Deji! What if someone sees us here! And... and! I didnt expect you to bring me to a place... like... this... ugh!"

"And so what Lope? Are they the ones to dictate your life?" He asked with anger. He rarely gets angry and I am surprised but its sparking up mine.

"You ask me and so what? You couldnt even see how much effort I put into this! You couldnt even compliment my dress! Idiot!" I screamed with equal anger.

"And what does that have to do with this place? I have had a hard day but I choose to spend this time with you! Does it matter where? Ehn?"

"Yes! It matters! This is not the type of life I want! You are dragging me down Deji! I regret the day I said yes to you!" I screamed in anger. I had met Deji at the federal high court during my company registration and all and seeing him in that outfit, getting into his car and looking so cool, I had seen a great future with him. The future I wanted. But it wasnt anything like what i had thought. He had nothing. And it wasnt what I needed now.

"What?" Deji stared at me in shock.

I glared back at him. I am not sorry for all I said but I didnt expect him to get up.

I didn't realise the whole eatery was focused on us and pointing fingers. This sparked up my anger.

"Deji!" I screamed and shot at Deji who was leaving. I grabbed him by the shirt and dragged him back into the seat, slamming him with full force to the chair.

"Where did you think you are going? Ehn!"

"Lope! Leave my shirt!" He grabbed my hands roughly.

"You want to walk out on me?" I asked as he pushed my hands off him.

" Over my dead body!" It was the last thing I would accept. I bent to find my purse, I would do the walking out.

"Lope..." Deji called as he stretched my purse to me.

"I am tired of you" he muttered with tears in his eyes.

"I am done. I am tired" he said.

I dont know if I can hear him clearly but I dont know what to do. I jerked my purse out of his hand and walked out of the filthy eatery.

I slammed my car door close and hit the steering wheel till my palms were red and hurting badly and I screamed in anger.

My past rushed at me in full force.

The voice of my mother's tears and mine echoed as my father dragged his boxes out of the house. I screamed in anger and held my head as I shouted in tears.

I didnt expect him to get angry. I just didnt want to accept the fact that he was broke. I can't believe Deji is leaving me. I just couldn't believe it.

He proved to be nothing different. He lied. He lied.
